Much anticipated game, Yakuza 7 is launching in November. It was previously announced for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, and PC – however, the date got moved to two days earlier (November 10th) to fit with the Series X/S launch.
While great news, PS5 fans also got word that the game will launch 4 months later on the platform. It won’t be available until March 2nd, 2021 for PS5 which means that its a timed next-gen game for Xbox.
While it’s expected after the rumors and how shy SEGA has been regarding the IP, It’s nice to have confirmation. However, I think that the early Xbox exclusives look a little weird, Tetris Effect and Yakuza 7 are both on PS4, not on PS5 but launching later. I don’t know if it’ll have the biggest effect on the brand, however, it might move some more units in Japan which would be welcome.
Xbox recently hosted a presentation at TGS, and even revealed their new mascot for the Japanese market – simply called “Xbox Series-Chan”.
From Sony’s end, I think that “losing” Yakuza, even if it’s timed, might sting a little bit. It’s worth saying that the game has been out since January 2020 in Japan, exclusively on the PS4 – which is why I don’t think it’ll do a whole lot of brand damage for them in Japan.
However, it does give the audience in the west a reason to pick Xbox over the PS5 for Japanese games… For a while at least!
It’s also worth pointing out that the game will support free upgrade on both Xbox and PlayStation, which means that if you own it on the previous generation, you’ll own it on the next-generation without charge.
Personally, I’m very excited about Yakuza 7 even though I’ve missed out on basically the entire series. I think the premise looks fun, and I’m intrigued by both the game and the series as a whole.
